For 7-pole one chooses if no constant tension is necessary (e.g. for cyclecarrier or small trailer). For 13-pole one chooses if constant tension is necessary (e.g. for a caravan).

NB: This can cause a fault to be registered on the vehicle system. Unplug one of the rear lights, start the engine, switch on the sidelights, depress the brake pedal and watch for any error messages appearing on the dashboard or if an audible warning sounds.

    Only possible at 13-pole wiringkits.

Go to the wiring kit listings and locate the kit part number you have. Click the link to the installation instructions and make sure your vehicle is listed and then check that you have all the components of the kit that are listed in the instructions.

See the instruction manual provided with the wiring kit where you will find the wiring terminal numbers and the corresponding cable colours.

Some ECS kits can be modified using an ECS PDC cut-out extension kit, other kits have integral switches so that PDC-sensors can be cut-out when plugging in the electrics a trailer or caravan (see operation of the wiring kit). If this is not available then we can offer you a socket with two microswitches for 'Fog cut-out and PDC cut-out. These sockets can be found in the Spare Part programme of ECS. Some vehicles have a factory fitted switch on the vehicle control panel.

C2 control is the way that the trailer or caravan indicators are monitored by the vehicle. This can either be from the installed towing module or by coding the vehicle management system. If it is a coded C2 sytem then generally the indicator warning will only operate when an indicator bulb fails. If it is the standard UK C2 system then the warning will operate and only stop if there is an indicator bulb failure. In Germany, Austria and United Kingdom it is obligatory that the driver is notified either by a visual or an audible signal that the indicators are operating correctly.

If the wiring kit is contains a C2 module, check the following:

    • Does the module require a live feed? This is not necessary at all modules. Check if the live feed connection +30 is connected on the module and also that it is live 12 Volts.
    • Check that the module has a good connection to earth on terminal 31?
    • Does the trailer, caravan and/or tester have standard tungsten lamps rated to 21 Watt ?(The module checks if there is a real draw of 21 Watts).
    • Has a towbar socket adapter without the trailer been left in the vehicle socket? If so, remove it.

If everything has been checked OK it may be necessary to reset the electronics using the following actions:

    • Disconnect the the module for 2 minutes.
    • Re-connect the module again.
    • Start the vehicle and operate the indicators 6 times to the left and a minimum of 6 times to the right without connecting the trailer.

Because the standard 13 pin wiring kit contains all the functions for the roadlights. If you require the supplimentary functions for the caravan battery charging and running the fridge then there is an extension kit available in the Spare Parts programme.

The Multicon system was a system where the 7-pole sockets had 6 extra flat contacts around the outside of the normal connectors. The manufacturer has updated the design and replaced the flat contacts with pins and corresponding sockets. This new design is known as the WeSt system. Some of the large European caravan manufacturers only provide caravans with 13-pole sockets which use this system.

An adapter is necessary to convert a vehicle fitted with a 13-pin socket to connect with a old style 7-pole socket. These are only designed to power the normal roadlights

The fog lamp(s) of the vehicle are being isolated and automatically switched off from the rear of the vehicle when towing a trailer or caravan to prevent the bright red light of the fog lamps of the vehicle reflecting off the front of the caravan. The reflected light can cause distraction to the driver. Almost all wiring kits are equipped with fog lamp switch-off. In some European countries this fog cut-out is compulsory.

Not if one has followed the fitting instructions and connected everything correctly according to the manual. However, the vehicle can continue to draw current (160mA) after it has been switched off until the CAN goes into sleep mode after about half an hour.
